At IYISL we have been running a teachers’ led self practice session for a while. We are now adding a Tuesday early morning led self practice session to our timetable for experienced students who are keen to develop their own practice.
Yoga self practice is practicing asana by yourself with self awareness and adjusting your pose without a teacher’s instructions. Self practice is an important part of developing your yoga practice. It will help you access poses you find challenging and also help you start to work at a deeper level which has great physical and mental benefits.
Most people find starting their own self practice is challenging. Apart from finding the time , space and focus and an element of self discipline for practice, it is difficult at first to know what poses to practice for best effect and in what order.
Led self practice is a way of helping with these issues. The teacher leads by setting the programme, showing the poses if needed and doing the poses with the students. Otherwise the practice is done quietly with no instructions or adjustments. It is a chance for you to find your own way into the asana.
A big thank you to everyone who attended and supported our Kathak dance performance - a reflection on dance, yoga, healing and community. I know everyone there felt touched by and really appreciated Vipul Bhatti’s heartfelt performance.
We often get asked which class to choose by new students so here is some information about the different class levels so you can choose the best class for you.

We are very pleased to welcome Julie back to IYISL.
Julie Hodges is a senior Iyengar yoga teacher who runs our sister South West London Iyengar yoga centre in Putney. She is an experienced, knowledgeable, clear and compassionate teacher and we are very happy to welcome her to IYISL.
In this half day workshop she will teach use of the yoga ropes (Yoga Karunta). Karunta is the Indian name for a wooden puppet manipulated by strings. Using the support of the ropes more difficult asanas can be practiced with more ease and safely, allowing you to adjust your body in poses more effectively.

On 7 Dec, the anniversary of Dr Geeta S Iyengar’s (Geetaji’s) birth, we are celebrating with a beginner and general level workshop taught by Glenys Shepherd.
The ‘forward bending’ group of asana (Paschima Pratana Sthiti) are approached with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Pupils with tight hamstrings often feel the prospect of ‘touching their toes’ a stretch too far! Flexible pupils having caught their toes are at a loss what to do next. All of us are prone to stretch one part to the neglect of another.
Making friends with forward bends means learning how to stretch all parts of the back, hamstrings and hips evenly. A goal equally challenging to all. This evenness of stretch is best understood and achieved by the intelligent use of props.
Beloved Geetaji writes -
Before one enters the asana the mind should be fresh, similar to a baby looking at its toys.
The toys are here waiting for you!
Glenys is the teacher who originally established IYISL 28 years ago and her teaching reflects decades of learning from Guruji and Geetaji as well as her own teaching experience. Her teaching is always both inspiring and fun!
The yoga day is for beginner and general level students.

To celebrate BKS Iyengar’s (Guruji’s) birthday and also to celebrate the day he came to open IYISL 28 years ago we are running a workshop focusing on backbends aimed at general and intermediate level students.
The asana programme will require stamina with the focus on Backward Extensions (Urdhva Pratana Sthiti = Upwards Extension Stability). This uplifting and architectural group of asana is the antidote to drooping and stooping! The extension of the front body in this important group strengthen and invigorate the spine, expand the lungs and encourage better breathing.
Come and discover new ways and means of gaining insight on how you can develop your practice and reap the bountiful benefits.

The period after Christmas is the ideal time for yoga - to cleanse and reinvigorate your body and mind and prepare with positivity for the year ahead.
Both these half day sessions are for all levels of student from confident beginner to intermediate level students. Beginners should be used to doing Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) and at least be familiar with the preparation for Sirsasana (head stand).
